Event Overview

Windows Phone 7 Developer Launch

Windows Phone 7 is here – and with it comes a new world of opportunity for passionate, creative developers. Windows Phone 7 gives you the power to build complex, robust applications using consistent hardware specs, a comprehensive development toolkit, and the all-new, full-service Marketplace for selling your apps. We want you to be ready to capitalize on this new frontier, so we’re launching two days of fast-paced learning to get you up and running with Windows Phone 7 development. Check out the agenda and pick the day that best fits your needs – or join us for both. The choice is yours. Whatever you can imagine, you’ll get the information you need to build high-demand apps with Windows Phone 7.

Windows Phone 7 Development Launch: Jump-Start Your Mobile Development (Day 1)

In the first of this two-day launch event, we’ll take you under the hood of Windows Phone 7 and the Windows Phone 7 platform with a progressive set of learning sessions. We’ll start with the basic tools and fundamentals of Windows Phone 7 application development, plus key design guidelines and our philosophy behind the all-new Metro interface paradigm. As the day unfolds, we’ll go deeper into Windows Phone 7 development scenarios using Silverlight, XNA and the Windows Phone 7 SDK. You’ll also see how to earn cash for your apps in the fully loaded Windows Phone 7 Marketplace.

Session 1: Get Started! The Basics of Building Apps on the Windows Phone 7 Platform

Meet Windows Phone 7! We’re proud to introduce the innovative Windows Phone 7 platform and explain the philosophy behind its all-new user experience design. We’ll outline the Metro design principles and cover the basics of building applications for Windows Phone 7. Finally, you’ll tour the Windows Phone Marketplace and learn about exciting revenue opportunities for developers and application publishers.

Session 2: From Idea to Interactivity: Design Guidelines for Windows Phone 7

Windows Phone 7 has a brand new interface paradigm called Metro that will delight end users. This session will give you a solid understanding of how XAML (eXtensible Application Markup Language), the heart of all Silverlight and Windows Phone applications, can enable you to create powerful animations and interactive experiences. We’ll cover all of the new Windows Phone 7 controls, guidelines for usage, and what you need to think about in the new multi-touch interface. We’ll also explore some core fundamentals, such as layout containers, control templating and how you can bind controls and properties using markup or code.

Session 3: Supercharge Your Windows Phone 7 Apps with Microsoft Silverlight

You’ve learned the fundamentals; now it’s time to dig a little deeper. This session will focus on building Windows Phone 7 applications with Microsoft Silverlight. You’ll see first-hand how to use Visual Studio 2010 and Expression Blend to develop and debug projects. You’ll also learn about the built-in templates and the many available controls and styles for Windows Phone 7. Finally, we’ll wrap by covering how to consume services in the cloud.

Session 4: Step Up Your Game with Windows Phone 7 and XNA

Microsoft XNA has been a favorite with game developers for many years. Now, developers can harness the power of the XNA framework to create highly immersive and responsive games for Windows Phone 7. We’ll charge full-speed into XNA to outline the basic Windows Phone model, explore its core device characteristics, and review the highlights of the XNA phone framework. Finally, we’ll show you some of the cool games that have been developed specifically for Windows Phone 7. Additional topics we’ll cover include: choosing between XNA and Silverlight, Sprites, 3D effects, Game Loop and Frameworks.

Session 5: Monetizing Your Apps with Marketplace

Windows Phone 7 will launch with a fully loaded Marketplace and the opportunity for developers to sell or distribute their applications. In this session, you’ll get all the details on how to navigate the certification process and publish your application – including updates. Learn how to increase discoverability while deepening your connection with your customers through the powerful business intelligence capabilities of the Marketplace.

Session 6: The Power of the Cloud: Exploring Windows Phone 7 Services

Get ready to build more engaging user experiences with Windows Phone 7 and several powerful cloud-based and phone-based components. Topics will include launchers and choosers; Microsoft Location Service, which allows you to obtain location information based on GPS, cell and WiFi signals; cameras, maps and pictures; tombstoning; Microsoft Push Notification Service that provides “live” updates for apps running on the device; accelerometer and much more.

Wait! There’s more!

Be sure to check out the hands-on Windows Phone 7 workshop happening the day after this event.
